Developing an Earth & Climate Science Makerspace - Spring 2025

Through an award from Battelle, we are building our own makerspace at the University of Maine in the department Earth and Climate Sciences. High school and undergraduate students will have access to cutting-edge technologies in Earth science including thermal-imaging drones, 3D printers and laser cutters, mobile weather stations, and software packages to create 3D renderings of landscapes and geology features.
Upward Bound and the Juneau Icefield Research Program
Summers 2022 - 2024: we worked with high school and undergraduate students  in Juneau Alaska for week-long field experiences in a Polar environment.

A few of the highlights students get the chance to experience:
- Hands-on experience with new tools (GPS, drones, ground-penetrating radar, LiDAR, Structure from Motion)

- Learning about local and native cultures and the impacts of a changing climate on these communities

- Seeing glaciers, the forests, and wildlife in a Polar environment

- Wilderness first aid and safety lessons
UMaine - Round River Conservation Program - CONAF
2016 - Present, Chilean Patagonia - we work with local communities in Chilean Patagonia (Tortel, Villa O'Higgins, Puerto Eden, Cochrane) to promote conservation efforts and to help people have access to the remote and beautiful Patagonian landscape.

Activities and workshops include:
- Field trips to glaciers in collaboration with the Chilean NAVY and CONAF. Check out the video!

- Day hikes and science activities for k-12 students

- Classroom-based lessons and activities
